What's the bottom line 'bout fish oil supplements?

Older studies had shown that fish oil is beneficial for people who have had a heart attack, says Penny Kris-Etherton, Ph.D, R.D., a professor of nutrition at Penn State University. Although some new studies haven't replicated the findings, that doesn't invalidate the original ones. "Nowadays, coronary patients also take drugs," she says. "It would be surprising if omega-3s were as effective as multiple medicines."

One thing is clear: People who eat a diet high in fish are likely to die of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends consuming fatty kinds like salmon and albacore tuna twice a week to lower triglycerides and blood pressure.
Next best, says Kris-Etherton, may be taking a supplement.
